Two days crossing the desert, soft sand, morphing into large drainage basin mud flats, then gravelly hills, bit of wind kicking up dust in the face but only to indicate how it could be horrendous.
Glacier always on the left
Heavy bags with 3.5 litres water and 8 days food
Flies gradually thin out and disappear
Finally arriving at Gaestavatn "oasis" for nice camp

After two and a half days walking across a moonscape covered in flies we've reached the top of Askja. (1250m) Spectacular views. Sunshine. Pretty epic. Hopefully swim in a warm caldera later and then on to Dreki campsite to pick up food parcel for next 8 days.
Not much mobile reception in these parts
Had second covid test, we still don't have it

3 glorious days of awesome scenery; gorges, canyons, waterfalls, lava fields, volcanoes, open plains, distant snow capped peaks.

Today was a half day, had to rent a car and drive to Akureyri for our second Covid test.

Survived the first three days to Asbyrgi, weather has been kind (touch wood), scenery so far reminiscent of Scottish highlands, now heading into some proper Icelandic stuff, towards Lake Myvatn.

I've finally got round to editing the photos from my "big" camera, and have uploaded them to flickr >>> here <<<

In other news i am back in Nottingham working for a few months. Annnd what with this british weather and gloomy onset of winter i am wondering if that was the sane choice rather than going to the southern hemisphere.
